It’s taken me three years
of having him as president, but I’ve finally pinned down what is unique about
him: he’s impossible to underestimate. No matter how frightening (appalling, inexcusable,
dangerous, dim-witted, thoughtless, arrogant, et cetera) his behavior is, it will
get worse. It always does.
By any sane and rational
measure, Trump’s handling of the pandemic has been disastrous, lethal, and
cartoonish—if I can use that word to describe 100,000 dead thus far—and we are nowhere
near being out of the woods. In fact, due to his incompetence, the U.S. seems
to be wandering right back into the woods, as infection rates are rising in
many areas.
